Following a good result and performance at Mold Alex the previous week penycae were looking to try and gain some momentum against an in form Llay side who had won their last 3 league fixtures. CAE were without midfielder Alex Rowlands who had been one of their top performers in recent weeks.
From the kick off both side looked dangerous when they had the ball but it was Penycae that looked like they may get the first goal after Tom Edwards got behind the Llay defence for a shot that went straight at the goalkeeper.
The battle was on an even keel until poor marking and organisation from a Llay corner resulted in a goal. Penycae hit back quickly with good play from Adam peters with saw him put Ahmed Ally in for Cae’s first goal.
In an almost carbon copy of the first goal Llay again went ahead through poor organisation in the penycae back line from another set piece. Play settled down a little and before half time a foul on the edge of the Llay box saw a wonder strike free kick from Connor tagoe go straight into the top corner, that saw both teams go in 2-2 at half time.
Following the break penycae started brightly and looked dangerous only to concede the most dubious penalty decision given at the riverside with both teams unsure what the ref had blown his whistle for, the resulting penalty was scored and that made the score 3-2 to llay.
Again penycae tried to respond and from a free kick on the edge of the Llay box Connor tagoe floated a brilliant cross into a dangerous area with Adam peters finding himself unmarked on the edge of the 6 yard area, unable to head the ball the resulting connection took the ball just out of captain Josh Millington’s reach as he tried to poke the ball home.
The game being very open at this stage and chances at either end a simple long ball caused a mix up between the penycae defence and goalkeeper and in the mistake the llay striker ran between them both and tucked the ball away.
Now struggling to stay in the game penycae conceded from yet another set play as a freekick wasn’t dealt with and Llay capitalised by heading the ball passed a stranded Matt Griffiths in the penycae goal making it 5-2 to Llay.
Penycae never gave up and showed great character and fitness by continuing to push for goals and finally got their reward when debutant Sean Cottrell broke through the Llay defence and pulled the bell back up Calyn Spencer to grab his second goal in 2 games.
The game finishing 5-3. Penycae will be looking to bounce back with a strong performance next weekend at home to Chirk AAA
