Penycae v Mold Alexandra

M.O.T.M: Mike Parry

After a poor performance on Tues night against Corwen, where our mistakes gifted goals, we were looking to go out and put a better performance on against Mold.

The message to the players was to keep it tight and keep it simple. Mold were a big physical outfit and would be a big test for our young side. The game started with both teams looking to gain the upper hand, a couple of half chances for both teams but nothing clear cut. On 14 mins Ben Jones cut in from the right and crossed towards the near post where Rhys Powell got to the ball first and got his shot off only for the mold centre back to slide in and block it with his hand, Penalty? Not according to the referee who waived play on, a long ball over our defence was then dealt with by Ryan Merrill who passed it back to Matt Griffiths in goal, his first touch was a bad one and went straight to the mold striker who rounded him and slotted into an empty net. 1-0. The goal and the penalty decision clearly upset our players and a ball played forward by josh Jones was chased down by ollie allman who give a foul away, was then booked by the referee for the challenge which looked harsh, the referee then showed Ollie a straight red card for dissent. A goal down and player down after 20 mins was not the start we wanted. On 26 mins a hopeful ball over the top seemed to be covered only for our defence and keeper to stop in there tracks and allow the mold striker in to make it 2-0. Our message was to get to half time so we could regroup, we then conceded another soft goal just before half time. 3-0 ht. After a few harsh words and changing our system, Ben Darlington replaced Matt Griffiths in goal ready for the 2nd half. The 2nd half was so much better, the intensity of our play and the way we pushed mold back to defending there 18 yard box was fantastic, we created chance after chance but the mold keeper was on form and better finishing from us we could have got back into the game, the only bad points about the 2nd half were the cards dished out resulting in Adam Peters getting a 2nd yellow with 5 mins to go, mold did get a 4th goal in injury time but wasn't a true reflection on our 2nd half performance. Ft 0-4. Again we're talking about mistakes which have cost us, a penalty decision that never went our way, our 2nd half effort was something to take forward, but we got to stop gifting teams goals.
