FC Queens Park nudged up to third place in the Welsh National League Premier Division with a 3-1 home victory over Penycae.
The game had been given added spice by the Cae’s midweek signing of former Park talisman and vice-captain Corey Smart.
And the new recruit almost had a dream start as a slight mix up at the back allowed him to burst clean through, but luckily for the Park he was forced slightly wide and could only fire into the safe hands of keeper Joey Jones.
Penycae did plenty of first half attacking, but the Park stood firm and James Gregory was unlucky not to poke home after a great cross/shot from Nath Buckley.
The second half started with Queen’s Park gaining the upper hand, wingers Aled Powell and Buckley bursting into prominence.
The first turning point of the game came when a free kick was pumped high into the Penycae area and Gregory was able to get up high and just beat the onrushing keeper to nick the ball. As it fell, Gregory spun and rolled it into the open net, via the post.
Penycae equalised through Anthony Dunleavy, but the Park rallied and won a penalty for handball, which Barry Torrence converted.
The visitors still looked dangerous on the counter, but Edgar Lima clinched it for the Park with the strike of the game.
