Corwen’s final game of 2021 saw them face Penycae, with the men in red and black hoping to sign off a turbulent year with a win. Despite the game taking place in late December the temperature was surprisingly mild with little or no wind.
Early on in the game Corwen’s Tom Williams ran down the wing with the ball before crossing into the path of James Davies, who saw his shot blocked and rebound into the path of Scott Evans, whose resulting shot brought the first save of the day out of goalkeeper Benjamin Darlington.
On the quarter of an hour mark William Scott gave the ball away to Tom Williams in the danger area, who took advantage of his early Christmas present and lobbed the ball over the oncoming Benjamin Darlington and into the back of the net to open the scoring.
The away side looked for a leveller; however Michael Parry could only send is header just over the crossbar.
With the thirty-one minutes on the clock the hosts failed to clear their lines and saw the ball played out to Evan Woodall, who unleashed an unstoppable pile-driver of a shot into the top corner of the net from the edge of the box.
After the interval Penycae looked to take the lead from a free kick, but Jaden Jones could only send his effort whistling wide of the post.
Jaden Jones was at it again when he shot at goal, which was parried by Corwen number one Josh Williams, who was able to recover and gather the ball at the second time of asking with a Penycae player in hot pursuit.
With fifty-seven minutes on the clock Evan Woodall added an assist to his goal as he found the feet of Kieran Smith from a corner, allowing Kieran to fire the ball home to give his side the lead.
Evan Woodall was in the thick of the action four minutes later as he played a low shot along the goal line, which didn’t look as if it had gone in; however an eagle-eyed linesman spotted that the ball had narrowly crossed the line before rolling back again and waved his flag to signify that a goal could be awarded.
The deficit wasn’t two goals for long though, as two minutes later Oliver Jones headed the ball into the back of the net from a Scott Evans corner to bring Corwen right back into the game.
It was the away side that were next to come close to adding to the scoring, as one of their players curled a shot at goal, which smashed against the post.
Josh Williams was brought into action on a couple of occasions, firstly when he saved a snapshot with his legs and secondly when Evan Woodall crossed the ball into the box from near the touchline, which was met by the toe of Joshua Mazzarella, which brought a save out of the Corwen keeper.
In stoppage time Scott Evans floated a free kick from the halfway line into the crowded penalty area, where to Corwen’s dismay it was gathered by Benjamin Darlington.
