Another tough fixture this week as we welcomed Llay Welfare to the Riverside, who at the start of play sat eight points behind us in 5th place.
As last week we came flying out of the blocks, albeit not as fast as last week, and took the lead on three minutes as Morgan Daykin danced through the Llay defence and converted from a tight angle. The game was played mostly in the middle third, as llay looked to play the ball quickly up to their strikers and we couldn't build any momentum going forward.
Llay had a good spell of possession in the first half and we struggled to get forward, although our defence were result and only allowed Llay half chances from set-pieces. On the half hour mark we started to get a foot hold in the game and after a few half chances a corner from the right caused confusion in the box and Aaron Jones converted for his second goal in his last two games. Half time we went in 2-0 up.
Second half was all about getting through the first 15 minutes but from our kick off, we looked as though we hadn't left the changing rooms, Llay found themselves one-on-one with Ben Darlington only to see there first chance smothered well by Darlington and we got off lightly as the rebound skimmed off the bar.
The speed of our attack, coupled with the experience of Ian Andrews & Shaun Pemberton, was causing Llay from committing too many players forward. And with Ben Richards getting on the bar and spraying the ball around space opened up. On 70 minutes we got the vital "next goal" as Morgan Daykin turned the fullback inside out before smashing home from the angle.
By now the young lads were in control of the game and with the defence scuppered anything Llay threw at them, we could attack at will. On 85 minutes we were awarded a free-kick from 25 yards, with Daykin on a hat-trick, the old war horse Ian Andrews stepped up and expertly curled the ball into the opposite corner. Although we only had 5 minutes left the lads looked for more goals and as the Llay defence pushed out Aaron Jones played a perfectly weighted through ball for full back Kyle Davies to run clear and faced ono-on-one with the keeper converted to wrap up the points.
Clean sheet, five goals and three points to close the gap on Holywell at the top
