League Cup action this week as we took to the road again to face Ruthin Town Development & Colts side.
The team we faced were far from a Development side but we've come to realise that in this league.
The lads started straight out of the blocks and the movement off the ball was causing the Ruthin defence problems as Tom Edwards, Kian Davies & Ruben Monterio continually got behind to cause problems. It didn't take long for our first chance as Davies & Edwards caused problems with their corners only to see Ruben Monterios chance at the back post cleared. A cut back from Tom Edwards found the on rushing Tommy Edwards who seen his shot go over from 10 yards. The chances started to mount and when Aaron Jones hit the crossbar off a corner it looked like it was a going to be a repeat of last week as we spurned chances. The defensive side of the team is getting stronger each game and they limited Ruthin to freekicks and no more to register any attempt on target We had a good penalty appeal waved away for handball but on 40 minutes we were awarded a penalty, up stepped Kian Davies who seen his spot kick well saved by the outstretched leg of the Ruhin keeper to keep the score 0-0 at the break.
Second half and although we had the better chances and controlled the game we weren't as free flowing as the first half. A few half chances and near misses as the game probably stagnated for 20 minutes. Around 70 minutes we started to up the tempo a little and after some good work on the left from Ruben Monterio his pull back was just out of each of Tom Edwards. The pressure was mounting and the game got a little stretched and a great one-on-one save from Ben Darlington kept the tie at 0-0, but on 84 minutes we were awarded a corner which was turned behind, Kian Davies then delivered the second corner and as the Ruthin player cleared Tom Edwards controlled and swivelled before driving the ball through a crowd of players to give us the lead.
The drama was'nt over and when the Ruthin striker raced through and rounded Darlington with an empty net it seemed we were heading for extra-time, but the Ruthin sticker hadnt counted on Aaron Jones who got back to cover and clear of the line. Some how the referee found seven minutes of injury time and in the sixth minute a cross found its way to the Ruthin striker who was free at the back post 5 yards out and angled his header towards the top corner only for a brilliant reaction save from Ben Darlington to keep us ahead.
A well deserved and pleasing 1-0 win, into the next round were we head to Holywell Town.
Next week we are finally back home and in derby day action as we welcome Cefn Mawr Rangers Res to the Riverside.
